Google Shopping

We are in the middle of a pandemic situation related to COVID-19 and it is known that some of the fastest-growing companies right now are all in the e-commerce industry. The reason is that everyone wants to buy stuff for their homes and e-commerce is the only type of commerce that is delivering at the moment. Now, Google wants to do something during the surge in e-commerce trend and it also has a platform called Google Shopping which is not a new platform but just an aggregator for buying and selling products on the internet.

However, the problem with Google Shopping was that it was dominated with a lot of paid listings and all those sales would go to whoever pays the highest for the top listing. But things will change now as Google says they are making changes to the shopping tab algorithm. This change will mean that listings that are relevant but are not paid will also be highlighted inside the tab so that people can sell their stuff online while users can have a variety of products to choose from.

Google says that “As consumers increasingly shop online, they’re searching not just for essentials but also things like toys, apparel, and home goods. The company adds that “While this presents an opportunity for struggling businesses to reconnect with consumers, many cannot afford to do so at scale.” They also understand that With hundreds of millions of shopping searches on Google each day, we know that “many retailers have the items people need in stock and ready to ship but are less discoverable online.”

So they are rollout a change as soon as next week where search results in the Google Shopping tab will consist primarily of free product listings citing reasons that struggling businesses might not be able to pay for ads during this crisis.
