Twitter provided extra clarity. This clarification was about how it limits the visibility of duplicate content shared widely across the platform.

This policy initially implemented in 2020. Unfortunately, Twitter’s duplicate content policy did not ever get completely communicated. In addition, the rules for violations were not clear. Twitter published a help page to answer these questions.

This is colloquially treated as “copypasta”. Twitter’s policy targets blocks of text and images. It also targets a combination of content copied and pasted into tweets. The content found to violate the policy seems to remain hidden from other users. It will also become ineligible for promotion.

Severe violations may result in removal or permanent account suspension. Twitter’s policy page states, “Copypasta or duplicate content is a tactic for propagating a message and used for a wide range of purposes. It can be repetitive, spammy, and disruptive to people’s experience on Twitter.”

Copypasta will manipulate the site to artificially boost content. It will also suppress information and manipulate the app’s trends and top search results.

Identical or near-identical posts tweeted by an individual account or multiple accounts will get limited under these new rules.

Also, Duplicate or copy-pasted tweets that disrupt user experiences will come under these new rules. However, this won’t affect Twitter’s retweet feature or copy-pasted content. Tweets that explicitly quote copied text will also not have any impact.

Twitter restricted the limitation of reaching duplicate tweets. This will happen in the same manner as Twitter restricts those deemed abusive, spammy, or in violation of applicable laws.

Making tweets ineligible for amplification in top search results and trends and Downranking tweets in replies will get limited. Not recommending tweets to people who don’t follow the author is another limited content. Finally, excluding tweets and accounts from email or in-product recommendations’ visibility will also get restricted.
