OpenAI’s flagship product, ChatGPT, is now fielding over 2.5 billion user requests every single day, according to internal data obtained by Axios and later confirmed by OpenAI. With 330 million of those daily queries coming from users in the United States alone, the chatbot’s meteoric rise underscores its increasing relevance in the global tech ecosystem.

Extrapolated over a full year, the figure translates to approximately 912.5 billion requests annually, a staggering number that, while still trailing Google’s estimated 5 trillion yearly searches, signals a significant shift in how users are accessing and interacting with information online.

Rob Friedlander, a spokesperson for OpenAI, confirmed the accuracy of the data in a statement to The Verge, further validating the figures reported by Axios.

ChatGPT’s adoption has grown rapidly over the past few months. Between December 2024 and March 2025, weekly active users surged from 300 million to over 500 million, a growth curve that’s caught the attention of major tech analysts and industry observers alike.

This explosive growth has not only cemented ChatGPT’s status as the leading generative AI platform but has also raised competitive alarms for Google. While Google Search remains the dominant force, ChatGPT’s conversational interface and utility for both casual queries and complex tasks have begun chipping away at the traditional search engine’s territory.

In a move that could further intensify the rivalry, OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its own AI-powered web browser, according to a Reuters report published earlier this month. If realized, the browser would represent a direct challenge to Google Chrome, which currently commands a majority of the global browser market share.

Adding fuel to the fire, OpenAI recently unveiled its ChatGPT Agent which is a powerful tool capable of performing tasks directly on a user’s computer. The feature allows the chatbot to handle complex, multi-step operations autonomously, pushing the boundaries of AI usability far beyond simple Q&A or search-like interactions.

While OpenAI has yet to provide an official timeline for the browser’s release, insiders suggest the launch could come within weeks, further signaling the company’s ambitions to expand its footprint in the AI-driven internet of the future.
