Google is venturing deeper into fashion tech with the launch of a new experimental app called Doppl, designed to help users visualize how different outfits might look on their own bodies using AI. The app, now available in the U.S. on both iOS and Android, offers a personalized virtual try-on experience, building on Google’s recent advances in online shopping tools.

Doppl works by asking users to upload a full-body photo of themselves. Once uploaded, users can feed the app images or screenshots of clothing – whether from a thrift store, a friend’s outfit, or something spotted on social media. The app then uses artificial intelligence to generate an image showing a virtual version of the user wearing the selected outfit.

What sets Doppl apart is its ability to go beyond static imagery. The app can transform try-on images into short AI-generated videos, giving users a more dynamic sense of how the outfit would appear in motion. Users can save their favorite looks, scroll through past try-ons, and share the virtual outfits with friends or on social media.

The launch of Doppl marks a shift from Google’s previous virtual try-on tools, which mainly featured clothes modeled on a variety of body types. With Doppl, the experience becomes far more personal – allowing users to effectively try clothes on a digital version of themselves.

“As a Google Labs experiment, Doppl is in its early days and it might not always get things right,” the company cautioned in a blog post. “Fit, appearance and clothing details may not always be accurate.” Still, Google says the tool is meant to make exploring fashion more interactive and fun, while helping users experiment with different styles in a low-pressure setting.

This standalone launch also allows Google to gather feedback and better understand how personalized virtual try-on technology performs in the real world. While there is no official word on whether Doppl will expand beyond the U.S., its early debut suggests the tech giant is serious about testing consumer interest in AI-powered fashion experiences.

For now, U.S.-based users can download Doppl and begin experimenting with looks – no fitting room required.
