Known for its popular action cameras, Insta360 is making a bold move into the wireless audio space with the launch of its first-ever wireless microphone: the Mic Air. With a sleek design and ultra-light build, the Mic Air aims to rival established players like DJI, Rode, and Shure, offering high portability without sacrificing functionality.

Weighing in at just 7.9 grams – lighter than the DJI Mic Mini (10g), Rode Wireless GO II (30g), and Shure MoveMic (8.2g) – the Mic Air is among the smallest and lightest wireless mics on the market. Despite its compact size, it promises up to 10 hours of battery life and a range of up to 300 meters under optimal conditions.

The Mic Air is available now through Insta360’s official store and Amazon, priced at $49.99 for the mic alone. A $69.99 bundle includes a USB-C receiver necessary for wireless connection to smartphones and Insta360’s camera gimbals.

Designed for solo creators and on-the-go users, the Mic Air offers multiple wear options: it can clip to clothing, magnetically attach, or hang from a pendant strap. The microphone also features onboard controls for muting, toggling noise cancellation, and starting or stopping video recordings. The USB-C receiver includes independent volume controls.

Insta360 notes that the headline 10-hour battery life and 300-meter range apply only when the mic is used with the USB-C receiver in an open, interference-free environment and with noise canceling disabled. When paired over Bluetooth with Insta360’s own Ace Pro 2 or X5 8K 360-degree action cameras, battery life drops to 7.5 hours and range decreases to between 30–50 meters.

While the Mic Air supports Bluetooth, smartphone users will still require the USB-C receiver for wireless use. iPhone users with Lightning ports may need an additional dongle, potentially complicating the setup.

Despite its small footprint, the Mic Air offers a compelling value proposition for creators seeking a lightweight, high-performance audio solution. With a strong start in the action cam market, Insta360’s expansion into wireless audio suggests the company is gearing up to compete on multiple fronts in the creator tech space. However, Insta360’s track record with their product quality needs to be studied as well going forward.
