We have already reported about the second round of layoffs from Meta as announced by its CEO Mark Zuckerberg and we are also aware that the first round of layoffs saw 12% of company’s workforce already being removed. It looks like Mark Zuckerberg really meant to make the company leaner and more efficient by hiring fewer employees and laying off less efficient ones. If you are not aware then Meta has a policy of all-hands meetings where employees can directly ask their questions to the CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

In the meeting, the Meta CEO was asked how employees are supposed to trust him or what he says after he said earlier that no more layoffs have been planned at the company and then less than a month later he announced a layoff of more than 10,000 employees. Meta CEO said that employees should trust him based on his company’s performance. He said “I would guess that the way people would evaluate whether you trust me and want to work at this company in whether we are succeeding in making progress toward the overall stated goals,”. He added “I think a lot of this is about the results we are able to deliver.”

Meta CEO, defending himself, said that while he did say that no more layoffs were planned but what changed after that was the economic condition and he expects those conditions to be around for a while now. An early analysis at Meta also revealed that those employees who joined remotely were less efficient compared to those who joined in-person and were shifted to remote positions or remained at the office.

Mark Zuckerberg also revealed that the company has decided to freeze remote hiring for now and that they could also make rules to mandate people to return to office for a certain period of time. However, he did mention that it would be “an ongoing conversation” and won’t be decided in a hurry. He also mentioned that “it’s not like we can just pause working while we are figuring this out.” saying that announcing the layoffs ahead of time is better for clarity of employees as well.
