The highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI is poised to become the entertainment event of 2025, with projections suggesting it will generate an astounding $3 billion in its first year. Developed by Rockstar Games and published by Take-Two Interactive, the game is expected to eclipse its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, which launched in 2013 and remains one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Analysts at DFC Intelligence predict that GTA VI will achieve over $1 billion in pre-orders before its autumn release on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Total revenues in the first 12 months are forecast to reach $3.2 billion, doubling the initial earnings of its predecessor and outperforming the top box office hits of 2024, such as Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two’s chief executive, expressed cautious optimism about the game’s potential. “I never claim victory before it occurs,” he told the Financial Times. “That said, I think Rockstar Games will once again deliver something absolutely phenomenal.”

Fans have eagerly awaited the new installment for more than a decade. The first trailer, released in December 2023, amassed over 225 million views on YouTube, reflecting the extraordinary anticipation surrounding the game. Featuring a storyline centered on a criminal duo reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, the game is set in the fictional Vice City, a vibrant reimagining of Miami.

Industry experts believe GTA VI will be a landmark release. Yoshio Osaki, CEO of IDG Consulting, called it “one of the biggest entertainment launches in history, not just in games but for all of media.”

Despite the excitement, GTA VI is launching in a challenging market. The video game industry has been recovering from a post-pandemic slump that resulted in over 33,000 layoffs since 2022, including nearly 15,000 in 2024 alone. Even Take-Two faced restructuring amid declining demand as consumers shifted focus to live events.

Zelnick acknowledged the downturn but expressed optimism about future growth, citing an “amazing release schedule” for 2025 and beyond. However, others remain cautious. Ampere Analysis forecasts a modest 2.2% increase in global gaming revenues to $195 billion in 2025, only slightly better than the 1.4% growth expected in 2024.

GTA VI, despite the gaming industry facing hurdles, promises to be a bright spot with its unparalleled hype signaling a potential resurgence for gaming’s cultural dominance.
