Samsung to introduce paid AI subscription for Galaxy smartphones and Ballie AI Robot

Samsung is expanding its AI Subscription Club to include Galaxy smartphones and the much-anticipated Ballie AI robot, according to reports from South Korea’s ETNews. Han Jong-hee, vice chair of Samsung Electronics, confirmed the rollout, signaling the company’s deeper commitment to integrating AI-powered subscription models across its product lineup.

The AI Subscription Club, launched in December 2024 for Samsung home appliances in South Korea, allows consumers to pay a monthly fee for AI-enabled products such as smart TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines. Subscribers benefit from lower upfront costs and optional repair and maintenance services, making the program an attractive alternative for cost-conscious buyers.

Now, Samsung is set to extend this model to its Galaxy smartphones as early as next month. Speaking on the expansion, Han said, “We will apply the subscription service to Galaxy smartphones starting next month. Ballie will be introduced first in Korea and the U.S., and we plan to supply it as a subscription in Korea.”

The subscription model for smartphones will be optional, with Samsung maintaining free access to its AI features until at least the end of 2025. Beyond that timeframe, the company has not confirmed its plans, leaving room for speculation on whether the subscription will become a necessity for accessing advanced AI functionalities.

Ballie, Samsung’s AI-powered companion robot, was first unveiled at CES 2020 and is now poised for its market debut. The subscription-based approach for Ballie could make the innovative robot more accessible to consumers while providing ongoing support and updates.

Whether the subscription model for Galaxy smartphones or Ballie will expand beyond South Korea remains uncertain. Samsung may shed more light on its plans at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose, California, on January 22nd. The event is also expected to feature the unveiling of the Galaxy S25 series, further bolstering the company’s flagship product lineup.

This move reflects Samsung’s strategy to leverage AI as a cornerstone of its ecosystem but it also raises questions about the future of free access to AI features and how a subscription model might influence consumer adoption. As AI technology becomes increasingly integral to Samsung’s products, the subscription model could reshape the way users interact with their devices and the company itself.
