OpenAI is gearing up for one of its most significant announcements yet. The company has teased a major update coming to ChatGPT, with a clear hint pointing toward the long-awaited debut of GPT-5.

The announcement was made via a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter), which read, “LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10AM PT.” The stylized ‘5’ in the word “livestream” left little room for speculation — GPT-5 is likely here.

This highly anticipated reveal marks the first official successor to GPT-4, which was launched in March 2023 following the initial GPT-3.5-powered release of ChatGPT in November 2022.

Since then, OpenAI has released a range of advanced models including GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1, GPT-4o, and the lighter o4-mini. However, none of these versions carried the weight or expectations of a full-number upgrade, until now.

OpenAI has been steadily building toward this moment. Earlier this year, CEO Sam Altman hinted that GPT-5 would bring substantial advancements, including visible “chain-of-thought” capabilities. This means users may soon be able to see the model’s intermediate reasoning steps during interactions, a move aimed at increasing transparency and trust. Altman also noted the intention to consolidate the o-series and GPT-series models under a unified framework with GPT-5.

Fueling further speculation, Altman casually mentioned his own experience using ChatGPT powered by GPT-5 in a social media reply, indicating that internal testing has been well underway.

In addition to model upgrades, OpenAI has been refining the ChatGPT user experience across platforms. On Monday, the company rolled out an update to promote healthier usage patterns and prevent overdependence, an effort likely intended to preempt criticism as AI becomes more integrated into daily life.

ChatGPT is currently available on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and web, and also features integration with Apple Intelligence via Siri. The release of GPT-5 could significantly enhance these experiences, especially on Apple devices now optimized for AI with new open-weight models that perform efficiently on Apple silicon.

All eyes are now on Thursday’s livestream event at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET), when OpenAI is expected to unveil GPT-5 and demonstrate how it will shape the next generation of AI interaction. This is expected to be big after the launch of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model last year.
