GoPro has launched its latest flagship action camera, the Hero 13 Black, addressing previous user concerns and introducing significant improvements in usability and video quality. Unlike last year’s model, which faced criticism for overlooking quality-of-life issues, the Hero 13 Black appears to be a game-changer with its focus on enhanced performance and battery life.

One of the standout features of the Hero 13 Black is its upgraded battery. The new 1900mAh Enduro battery offers a 10% increase in capacity and improved power efficiency, which significantly extends recording times across various settings. GoPro has emphasized that this enhancement translates into substantial gains in battery life, particularly noticeable during high frame rate captures. For example, recording in 2.7K at 120 frames per second (fps) now lasts 58% longer, while 5.4K at 60 fps sees a 38% increase in recording duration. Users capturing footage in 4K at 60 fps will benefit from a 28% longer runtime, and 1080p at 240 fps provides a 39% extension in recording time. These figures are based on testing conducted at 77 degrees Fahrenheit with no airflow.

“A 10% larger capacity 1900mAh Enduro battery combines with improved power efficiency and a redesigned battery enclosure to deliver longer runtimes in all conditions. Hero 13 Black provides 1.5 hours of continuous recording in the highest resolution 4K30 and 5.3K30 settings, plus over 2.5 hours of continuous recording at HD-quality 1080p30,” said GoPro in a statement.

Additionally, the Hero 13 Black introduces Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) HDR, enhancing its already impressive HDR capabilities. While HDR was available in the previous model, the addition of HLG in the Hero 13 Black provides a wider color gamut, recording in 10-bit color depth and Rec. 2100 color space. This advancement promises richer and more dynamic color representation, elevating the overall quality of footage captured.

These updates reflect GoPro’s commitment to addressing user feedback and enhancing the overall user experience. The Hero 13 Black is now available for pre-order, with shipments expected to commence later this month. For enthusiasts and professionals seeking a robust, high-performance action camera, the Hero 13 Black stands out as a compelling choice. Along with a redesigned battery and slightly better low-light performance, GoPro wishes its camera will do better this year but it might not be enough.
