Google’s december updates were positive for many, negative for some
Google’s December updates rolled out in quick succession, bringing a wave of change to search engine results pages (SERPs). For many website owners and SEOs, the updates have been a pleasant surprise, while for others, the changes have reinforced long-standing frustrations with the search giant’s algorithm tweaks.
Across forums and social media platforms, the response to the updates has been largely positive. In Facebook groups and SEO communities, many reported a resurgence in traffic for websites that had been struggling since previous updates. Some affiliate marketers celebrated the revival of dormant sites, attributing the renewed traffic to Google’s December adjustments.
On Black Hat World (BHW), a forum often frequented by SEO practitioners, users shared stories of recovery. One member described seeing a 100% increase in traffic, while another reported a ranking rebound after a nine-month slump. These narratives painted a picture of an update that appears to have rolled back some of the negative effects from earlier algorithm changes.
“I was affected by the March update and thought it wouldn’t recover ever again. Hopefully, this December update will keep my site stable,” shared one forum user.
Others observed early signs of improvement, with keywords reappearing in tools like Ahrefs and increased impressions in Google Search Console.
Not all stories were celebratory. Some users on BHW and other platforms noted declines, particularly for sites built on strategies like expired domains. One forum member lamented, “Lots of sites got tanked, including three of mine.”
On X (formerly Twitter), reactions to Google’s updates leaned predictably negative. Comments ranged from complaints about big brands monopolizing SERPs to grievances about the perceived decline in small business visibility. However, such comments lacked specificity and have been a consistent refrain accompanying nearly every Google update announcement.
The overall sentiment following Google’s December updates suggests a shift that benefited a substantial portion of website owners, particularly those recovering from previous penalties. While some concerns remain—particularly among those negatively impacted—the updates have introduced an air of cautious optimism in certain corners of the SEO community.
As the rollout concludes, the full impact of these changes will likely become clearer in the coming weeks. For now, SEOs are left to adapt to the evolving search landscape once again.
