Google phases out Chromecast hardware and unveils TV Streamer
Google has introduced the Google TV Streamer, marking the end of the iconic Chromecast era. This new device, which will be showcased at Google’s Made by Google 2024 event next week, represents a major shift in the company’s approach to streaming and smart home integration.
After more than 100 million Chromecasts were sold over an 11-year span, Google is retiring the beloved streaming dongle in favor of the Google TV Streamer, which offers a range of enhanced features and a more robust design. Unlike the compact Chromecast that plugged directly into a TV’s HDMI port, the Google TV Streamer is a larger, stand-alone unit designed to rest on an entertainment console beneath the TV.
Priced at $100, the Google TV Streamer is not just a streaming device but also functions as a smart home hub. This new role is part of Google’s strategy to reinvigorate interest in the Nest product line. The device integrates seamlessly with Google Home and Matter-enabled accessories, providing users with an enhanced smart home experience. It also includes a built-in Thread border router, which improves connectivity with smart home devices.
The redesigned Google TV Streamer includes a Google Home panel within its user interface, allowing users to manage Nest cameras and adjust smart home settings directly from the device. This integration means that users can monitor live feeds from Nest cameras and control the temperature, among other functions, all from one central hub. However, at launch, it will only support Nest cameras and not third-party brands.
A key component of the new Google TV Streamer is its use of Gemini, Google’s latest AI technology. Unlike Google’s previous Assistant-based models, Gemini will drive the device’s functionality, offering advanced conversational capabilities and personalized content curation. According to Google, the AI will help users discover content by organizing suggestions across various streaming services based on their preferences, and will enable the creation of watchlists tailored to each household member’s tastes.
With the combination of streaming capabilities and smart home integration, Google aims to consolidate its presence in both markets, delivering a comprehensive and user-friendly experience while still keeping the core functionality of Chromecast lovers intact.
