In a move aimed at improving user control and mental well-being, Discord has launched a new feature called “Ignore” as part of its efforts to promote a safer and more mindful online experience. Announced on Safer Internet Day 2025, the feature allows users to mute specific individuals without them knowing, providing a discreet way to take a break from unwanted interactions.

The “Ignore” button, now available on the popular messaging platform, is designed to give users more control over their social space on Discord. Unlike the existing “Block” feature, which prevents all communication with a user and can feel confrontational, the Ignore button offers a subtler solution. When a user opts to ignore someone, their messages, notifications, and updates are hidden from view, but the individual being ignored will not be notified. This provides a non-confrontational way to distance oneself from specific users without causing unnecessary tension.

Discord explained that the feature was developed in response to feedback, particularly from younger users who found the act of blocking to be intimidating or uncomfortable. According to the company, users expressed a need for a way to limit interactions in a way that feels less dramatic. The Ignore button addresses this concern, enabling users to control their interactions while avoiding potential conflict.

To use the feature, users can simply visit the profile of the person they wish to mute, tap the three-dot menu, and select the “Ignore” option. Once activated, all direct messages, mentions, and notifications from the ignored user will be hidden, allowing for a more peaceful and manageable experience on the platform.

While this new feature aims to give users a greater sense of control over their social interactions, Discord also reminds users of the importance of remaining vigilant about online safety. In a separate initiative, the company announced its partnership with ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing open-source tools for detecting and reporting harmful content, such as child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The initiative is supported by major companies, including Google, Roblox, and OpenAI.

In conclusion, the introduction of the Ignore button on Discord marks a significant step toward fostering a safer and more thoughtful online environment. By providing users with more control over their interactions, Discord is continuing to prioritize both user well-being and online safety.
