Apple reportedly testing Mac Mini with M5 chips before possible Fall 2025 launch

Apple is preparing an updated version of the Mac mini powered by its next-generation M5 and M5 Pro chips, according to reports, with testing already underway. The move suggests a possible launch in the coming months, though the compact desktop’s design is expected to remain unchanged from its recent M4 refresh.
Sources familiar with Apple’s plans told AppleInsider that the company is working on a machine carrying the identifier J873g, believed to be the M5 Mac mini. Another version, labeled J873s, was also spotted last month, signaling a higher-end configuration likely to feature the M5 Pro. For comparison, the current M4 and M4 Pro Mac minis carry identifiers J773g and J773s.
The M4 Mac mini, announced earlier this year, introduced a smaller footprint alongside significant performance gains, making it one of the most efficient and cost-effective desktop computers available. Analysts suggest Apple will retain this design for the M5 generation, focusing instead on internal performance improvements.
Pricing has become a key part of the Mac mini’s appeal. The current entry-level M4 model, with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage, sells for $499, with an upgraded 512GB version at $689. The M4 Pro configuration, which includes 24GB of memory and a 512GB SSD, is listed for roughly $1,255. These figures are considered highly competitive in an industry where Apple was once criticized for overpricing its hardware.
Industry watchers expect Apple to maintain that aggressive pricing strategy with the M5 and M5 Pro, potentially cementing the Mac mini as one of 2025’s best desktop deals if performance gains are as significant as projected.
However, outside of the processor bump, few changes are anticipated. Apple is not expected to alter the Mac mini’s compact chassis, connectivity options, or storage tiers. That said, the appeal of the machine has always rested on its unmatched price-to-performance ratio, a reputation Apple will likely lean on again with its next update.
If testing stays on track, Apple could introduce the M5-powered Mac mini before the end of the year, setting up another strong entry in its desktop lineup just as rivals struggle to balance cost and performance in the small form factor PC space.
