OpenAI, the artificial intelligence powerhouse behind ChatGPT, is reportedly developing its own social media platform in a move that could significantly reshape the digital landscape. According to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans, the initiative is still in its early stages, but a prototype already exists internally, complete with a social feed centered on AI-generated images.

CEO Sam Altman has been quietly soliciting feedback from select outsiders, signaling serious consideration of the idea. While it remains unclear whether OpenAI intends to launch the project as a standalone app or integrate it into ChatGPT—which became the most downloaded app globally last month—the concept underlines the company’s growing ambition beyond conversational AI.

An OpenAI spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment before publication.

If launched, the new platform could intensify Altman’s rivalry with Elon Musk, who founded OpenAI in 2015 but has since distanced himself from the company. Tensions escalated earlier this year when Musk reportedly offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI—an offer Altman promptly rejected with a quip: “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

OpenAI’s foray into social networking also places it in direct competition with Meta. The Facebook parent company is said to be preparing its own AI assistant with an integrated social feed, and sources suggest OpenAI’s move may be a direct response to that development. In a February post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman hinted at the possibility, writing, “ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app.”

Beyond competition, the strategic value of such a platform is clear: access to a rich stream of real-time data. This kind of data is already leveraged by Meta’s LLaMA and Musk’s xAI—whose Grok model draws from X content—to train large language models. A proprietary social network would provide OpenAI with a similar edge.

According to sources within the AI community, one core idea of the prototype is to use AI to enhance how people share and consume content—potentially by generating more engaging or viral material. “The Grok integration with X has made everyone jealous,” said one individual from a competing AI lab. “Especially how people create viral tweets by getting it to say something stupid.”

Whether or not OpenAI’s social platform will reach the public remains to be seen. However, its development highlights the company’s broader ambitions to expand its influence and data ecosystem in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.
