Amazon invests another $2.75 Billion in Anthropic to compete with OpenAI and others
In a move that would signal the rising competition in the world of large language models, Amazon has completed the second phase of its investment in Anthropic, a rival to OpenAI. The tech giant committed to investing up to $4 billion in Anthropic, with the additional $2.75 billion marking Amazon’s largest check ever written to another company.
The strategic rationale behind Amazon’s investment is clear: to offer competitive models through its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), in response to the OpenAI-powered offerings of its primary cloud rival, Microsoft. Anthropic emerged as the preferred alternative for Amazon, positioning itself as a leading player in the development of large language models. While Amazon’s investment in Anthropic reflects its recognition of the importance of such models, it also underscores the company’s desire to maintain pace with its competitors in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
Had it not been for regulatory constraints on large acquisitions by Big Tech companies, it is speculated that Amazon may have pursued an outright acquisition of Anthropic. However, the tech giant has opted for a passive investment approach, signaling its commitment to Anthropic while maintaining a minority stake and refraining from securing a board seat. Notably, Anthropic has reciprocated Amazon’s investment by committing to spending $4 billion on AWS services over the coming years.
While Amazon’s investment in Anthropic may suggest a cooperative relationship, internal dynamics within the tech giant paint a more complex picture. Amazon’s Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) team, led by Senior Vice President Rohit Prasad, is reportedly engaged in direct competition with Anthropic’s models. The AGI team has set an ambitious goal of outperforming Anthropic’s latest Claude models by the middle of this year, signaling Amazon’s determination to assert its dominance in the field.
Amazon’s forthcoming flagship model, internally codenamed Olympus, is currently undergoing training and boasts a significant scale with hundreds of billions of parameters. The development of Olympus underscores Amazon’s commitment to innovation and its relentless pursuit of technological advancement. Amazon has also announced that it will use AI in its e-commerce marketplace as well as other products such as AWS as well.
