OnePlus has unveiled key hardware details about its upcoming flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 13, set to launch globally on January 7. In an interview with Android Central, Ryan Ruan, head of OnePlus’s Industrial Design Center, shared insights into the phone’s design and functionality, emphasizing its balance between style, durability, and user experience.

The OnePlus 13 will feature a backplate available in multiple finishes, including an innovative “Microfiber Vegan Leather” on the “Midnight Blue” variant. This material, described by Ruan as softer than other synthetic leathers, is designed to mimic the feel and grip of natural leather while maintaining sustainability and durability. Notably, the material does not interfere with wireless charging, addressing a common concern with leather alternatives.

The display of the OnePlus 13 also takes a unique approach. While it is flat, OnePlus has incorporated a “micro-curve” along all four edges. This design enhances the ergonomics of the phone, offering a more comfortable hand feel compared to the sharper edges of competitors like the iPhone or Pixel. The slight curvature also improves durability, reducing the risk of damage from drops. Instead of Gorilla Glass, the screen is protected by a custom “Ceramic Guard,” reinforced with nano crystalline technology, which OnePlus claims is twice as drop-resistant as standard options.

Another standout feature is the phone’s weight distribution, which Ruan describes as a “50/50 balance.” When the device is rested on a finger at the OnePlus logo, it will remain perfectly balanced. This thoughtful design element highlights the company’s commitment to creating a device that feels natural and well-engineered.

The OnePlus 13 is also built to withstand the elements, with both IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance. Under the hood, the phone features a silicon battery with a massive 6,000 mAh capacity, promising extended battery life to meet the demands of heavy users.

With these innovations, OnePlus aims to set its flagship apart in the highly competitive smartphone market. The device’s combination of cutting-edge materials, user-centric design, and robust durability positions it as a strong contender in 2024. Enthusiasts and tech aficionados eagerly await its launch on January 7 to experience these features firsthand.
