How to Write Headlines That Get Clicks

The headline decides whether anything else gets read. Here’s how to write ones that earn the click — honestly.

How to Write Headlines That Get Clicks

Most people decide whether to read something based on the headline alone. Get it wrong and great work goes unseen. Here’s how to write headlines that earn the click — without resorting to clickbait.

Promise a clear benefit

The strongest headlines make a specific promise: what the reader will learn, gain or solve. Vague headlines get ignored; specific ones get clicked.

Be specific and concrete

Numbers, specifics and clarity beat clever wordplay. “How to cut your page load time in half” beats “Speed matters.” Specificity signals substance.

Match the reader’s intent

Speak to what the reader actually wants at that moment. A headline that mirrors their question or goal feels made for them.

Don’t overpromise

Clickbait earns a click and loses trust the moment the content underdelivers. The click isn’t the goal — a satisfied reader is. Make sure the piece delivers what the headline promised.

Write several, pick the best

Professionals rarely use their first headline. Draft five or ten, then choose the clearest, most compelling one. Pair a strong headline with a good meta description for search.
