Since the time of the announcement of its arrival, the mobile-first index has been in the news every now and then. Google earlier had set a deadline for complete conversion. But recently, they have announced that there is no deadline for the ultimate switchovers to a mobile-first index. The primary reason for this decision is to accommodate the websites that have not yet updated to mobile-friendly versions.

The idea of a mobile-first index came from Google to list out the websites with mobile versions in the form of an organized index. This formation was to ensure easy ranking of the websites. Google found a smart way to enhance user experience on websites on smartphones.

As per Google’s declaration in 2016, “Our ranking systems still typically look at the desktop version of a page’s content to evaluate its relevance to the user. This can cause issues when the mobile page has less content than the desktop page because our algorithms are not evaluating the actual page that is seen by a mobile searcher.”.

The original objective of Google was to move both website ranking and indexing into documents that are completely mobile-friendly. There is a wide usage of websites and a lack of optimized mobile versions of them. For this reason, they decided to keep this objective aside.

Social media and other sources say that the algorithm of Google indexing will have some changes. However, the exact factors that are going to change have not come to light yet.

Bing has come up with an interesting protocol named IndexNow for accurate indexing. But Google has not accepted it readily. Rather, Google has confirmed that the team is currently testing out the benefits and features of the protocol. It is in order to understand if it is of good use for Google.
